Major Lazer x La Roux - QUICKSAND [Lazerproof Mixtape]

I remember when the Major Lazer x La Roux (Lazerproof) mixtape was released in 2010 and me and my buddies HATED it. Especially in comparison to the Diplo x Santigold mixtape in 2008 which was incredible (Top Ranking: A Diplo Dub) and the Diplo x M.I.A mixtape (Piracy Funds Terrorism) which had a huge impact on me in 2007 (released in 2005-ish)… but I had another listen to the Lazerproof mixtape yesterday and I found a track/remix that I love (out of 14)

I find myself leaning towards this disco-y vibe these days. I’m happy with that :)

Etienne De Crecy in the ‘CUBE’

In April 2009, I got a newsletter from MATTER club (in London’s Millennium Dome) about a competition to see a special gig featuring Etienne De Crecy and his ‘Cube’ show. The video attached to the email (above) is phenomenal. That was the 1st time I’d seen anything like that (projection show thingy). I didn’t win the tickets, but my friend did. So off we went to see it. And it was pretty spectacular. By this point in my raving streak I had gotten bored and needed more stimulation, and this audio-visual delight was what I needed.

Basically, Etienne De Crecy is placed in the middle of this construction, and a light show is projected on to it. All movements in time with the music. Gradually getting more and more complex and more and more trippy! A one point he was controlling the lights himself with one of his instruments. Not only was it a mind-blowing visual show, but his music was a great demonstration of French electronic music.

“The Cube is a collaboration between de Crécy and the French design collective EXYZT. Architects by day and techno musicians by night, EXYZT have been experimenting with scaffolding and lighting design for a variety of temporary structures and art instillations in France for several years. For de Crécy they created not only a stage set that could be easily built in a short period of time, but one that highlighted the music and the musician himself, turning a knob-twiddler into an unforgettable spectacle.”

It does sound very much like a Chromeo track and the intro reminded be a lot of another big track Vanity 6 - Nasty Girl. Tres cool groove.

I always go on about how 2008 was a great year for me, musically. I basically had a lot of fun listening and dancing to house, electro tracks and all sorts. I have so many tracks in the crevices of my mind that sum up 2008 for me, but there was one compilation that captured the essence… Bang Gang Deejays - LSD (Light Sound Dance), released on Modular Records. Full of great tracks and remixes, old and new, that made me dance and goof around. I became a big fan of these Australian guys, especially the founder of Bang Gang, AJAX. I like their style of DJ-ing… great party bangers, quick mixing, no song dragged out too long and blended perfectly. This double CD mix consists of 69 tracks altogether. Each CD has a beginning, middle and end… in the obvious ‘story-telling’ sense. It has a intro, build up, goes hard, then ends with a more subdued house track. It was quite an expensive CD purchase but it was worth it. I still listen to it now.

I’ve made a playlist of 10 out of the 69 tracks that make me get up, wile out, dance and act silly. As well as appreciate the production of these songs. Have a listen to my YouTube playlist. It’s in no particular order.

Zager & Evans - In The Year 2525

A great track. It’s one of those songs I’ve heard so many times over the decades but just didn’t process it. So, recently I began watching a film called ‘Gentlemen Broncos’… I watched the opening credits which used this song and I just had to look for it. I didn’t, however, get to watch the rest of the film because I accidentally downloaded the Spanish dubbed version :-|

So I’ve been listening to this song alot and I can’t help but belt it out. And I have found that my voice sounds awesome singing this song. I have that vibe. I can’t sing for shit. At all. I’m an awful singer. But I think everyone has at least one song or two, where their voice sounds incredible… and this song is my one :-D

The lyrics are pretty deep too. And quite chilling, in regards to how the world could be in the near future or even actually IS. (considering this song was out in 1969)

Bassanovva - Chicken Lover EP is one of the most underrated releases on GRIZZLY, and just underrated in general.  This remix by the Nacho Lovers is just incredible. And I listen to it quite a lot on repeat. The beat, the bass, the tropical vibe… when I listen to it I imagine myself in a luxury drop top pearly white car, somewhere like Miami or Ibiza, driving at sunset really fast wind blowing in my hair… then when the beat drops I start doing crazy handbrake turns and skids. Haha :)

Bassanovva consists of Jubilee and Grahmzilla, both talented producers and DJs in their own right. I don’t know if they will be releasing more material together as Bassanovva, but I know I’d appreciate it.

I didn’t even need to listen to this stream before I purchased the EP! With the teasers that are around, the stream of BUGG’N which has been kicking about and their incredible debut show at the Village Underground last month… I snapped this up immediately. I’m already a fan and I want to support.

I don’t go out much anymore, but I did go see Lunice x Hudson Mohawke perform their 1st London gig as TNGHT… and they tore it down! Normally you see the crowd towards the front doing most of the ‘moshing’… but that bass and those Mohawke trumps made the vibe ripple to back within minutes. I had on my ‘oof’ face at each drop and was doing that lip over-bite ‘appreciation’ face throughout (and my fist-pumping / shadow-boxing dance I seem to do these days for some reason). It was so good.

The odd sweaty kid would jump on to the stage and get chucked off by security, but towards the end, the security were hopeless when the stage got invaded. It was funny :) …and always a good sign.

Iggy has a few videos out at the mo… but this one has been most anticipated I think, Murda Bizness. I mentioned in my other Iggy post how I stopped following her on twitter, but I do now follow her on instagram because she is gorgeous in a unique kind of way, so I just want to SEE her face/body. I wanted to comment more on the video… nothing too in-depth, just that the concept is really good, but it wasn’t executed very well. Be it poor editing, rubbish shots… it had potential but the end product isn’t solid. Ah well.

Oh, I almost missed this. Only by a day though… normally I’m months late. This is fresh material from Crystal Castles which could feature on the new album which I thought would be out this summer. I guess it’ll come later in the year. Their previous 2 self-titled albums were mesmerizing. I still listen to them now. I can’t decide which I like more out of the 2.

I saw them @ Sonar, Barcelona in 2009… the entire set was a disaster [the band’s sound guys had a conflict with the Sonar sound guys which led to not being able to hear anything, to only being able to hear Alice Glass’ voice, then only backing track… which ended with Alice throwing the Bass drum at the Sonar sound guys, then Ethan rugby tackling them when they tried to man-handle Alice, then shutting down the lights so no one could see the rest of the scuffle, WATCH HERE]… but despite that, I loved it. I loved that they carried on whole-heartedly to the last song. (Haha… I just wrote that from memory, then found the video after… I had remembered it exactly how it happened :-D )

This new track PLAGUE (free download)… it’s a slightly different vibe to the last 2 albums. A growth, experimenting, evolving their sound? I haven’t made up my mind yet if I like/love it. I need to hear more from the new album when it’s released to fully absorb it. I’ll keep listening. Very much looking forward to hearing more.

The xx - Angels

This will be the first single from COEXIST, the new album from The xx. I’ve been waiting a long time for this. Their debut album was an amazing piece of work. I thank my mate Steve for introducing me to them on MYSPACE! I then went out and bought the CD straight away. Then converted it to MP3’s for my Nokia N97. Still sounds so beautiful (on my iPhone 3GS) :-p I never managed to see them live and that bugs me still. Yea, I still have a chance now, but it won’t be as special as it would’ve been a few years ago.

So, this track Angels… it’s very pretty. It’s nice. Similar ‘Chris Isaak’ vibe as before. I’ve only listened to it 5 times now. If I have to pick holes (which I’m good at :-/) I’d say Romy’s breathy voice seems a bit forced. Regardless, I have high hopes for the rest of the album. xx
